Garage door springs do the heavy lifting every single time your door opens, and they are the part that fails most often. The good news is that a failing spring usually gives you warning signs before it snaps completely. Catching them early means you can schedule a replacement on your schedule instead of finding yourself locked out at the worst possible time.

1. The door feels heavy or opens unevenly

If you lift the door by hand with the opener disconnected and it feels much heavier than it used to, or one side rises faster than the other, the springs are losing tension. A properly balanced door should hold in place about halfway up.

2. The door opens a few inches and stops

Many openers have a safety feature that stops the motor when it senses too much resistance. If your door lifts a few inches and reverses, a broken spring is forcing the opener to lift the full weight of the door on its own.

3. You hear a loud bang from the garage

When a torsion spring breaks it releases its stored energy suddenly, often with a bang loud enough to be mistaken for something falling. If you heard a loud noise and the door will not open afterward, a snapped spring is the likely cause.

4. There is a visible gap in the spring

Look at the spring above the door. A two to three inch gap in what should be a tightly wound coil is a clear sign the spring has broken.

5. The door closes too fast or slams shut

Weak or broken springs cannot control the descent of the door, so it may drop faster than normal or slam down. This is both a warning sign and a safety hazard.

6. The cables are loose or hanging

Springs and cables work together. When a spring fails, the cables often go slack and can slip off the drums, which can pull the door off its tracks if you keep operating it.

7. Your door is seven or more years old

A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, or roughly seven to nine years for an average household. If your springs are original and past that age, wear alone makes failure likely, especially if you use the garage as your main entry.

Do not run a door with a broken spring

Operating the opener with a failed spring forces the motor to lift a load it was never designed for, which can burn it out and lead to a much larger repair bill. Spring replacement is also dangerous to attempt yourself because of the extreme tension involved. If you notice any of these signs, call a trained technician.
